Joy in Work Curiosity Collective: silencing in teams and organisations

Dr David Naylor joins the Joy in Work Curiosity Collective to share his research into what silences us in teams and organisations and what can help us find and keep our voice.

About this session

We are told we have a duty to speak up and to listen. Easy to say, harder to do when you feel your voice or what you have to say, is not going to be welcomed. Therefore, it is no surprise we sometimes choose silence.

This session – the first in a series of three sessions exploring this topic with Dr David Naylor – seeks to open a conversation about when and why we go quiet, to notice and make sense of how silence turns up in our conversations. The conversations that should be the basic tool to collaborate, share ideas, to improve things and keep people safer.

The session offers an overview of different forms of silence, to test the idea that reading’ silence opens up useful lines of inquiry about what enables and blocks a diversity of voices and ideas in the room.

About our speaker

Dr David Naylor is a director of a consultancy practice researching and developing practical interventions to help people resist being silenced at work and find a way of speaking to what they see and know. This builds on his work at The King’s Fund, projects in the NHS and wider public sector to understand and mitigate the effects of bullying and incivility, and his doctoral research into being constructively awkward’ in organisations. He is the author of the book Speaking Up in a Culture of Silence.
