Clinicians' and operational managers' views sought

The Strategy Unit is seeking clinicians and operational managers to participate in a project about patients who are discharged with non-specific diagnoses following an emergency hospital admission.

Each week more than 100,000 people in England are admitted to hospital in an emergency.  In most cases, by the time the patient’s stay in hospital comes to an end, the clinical team has reached a view about the underlying medical condition that led to their admission.  But for 1 in every 6 patients, this is not the case.  Their medical record describes the signs and symptoms (ICD10 Chapter R) that they presented to hospital with, but not a diagnosis.  This project seeks to describe this cohort of patients so that we might better understand their experiences and outcomes.

Clinicians and operational managers working in emergency inpatient settings, are invited to participate in an interview lasting 30–60 minutes at a time convenient to them between now and mid-September 2025. The interview will explore the participant’s view about this cohort of patients.  We will seek participants’ views on a proposed classification of these patients that we have developed, and explore why this outcome is more common for women and people from certain ethnicities.
