Shape the future of community pharmacy prescribing

Q members are invited to contribute to an evidence base which will help inform future policy around independent prescribing within community pharmacy.

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) is working with THIScovery and Q to develop an evidence base around independent prescribing within community pharmacy, to help inform future support, infrastructure and policy changes.

Community pharmacists can now train to prescribe medicines independently, without always needing to refer patients back to a GP first. The NPA wants to understand how this is working in practice, and what changes are needed to help it work better and reach more patients.

As part of the first stage of this work, pharmacists, GPs, nurse prescribers, practice managers and commissioners are invited to take part in a survey about their experience of independent prescribing. Members of the public are being invited to take part in a separate survey to capture their experiences too.

THIScovery will be running and analysing the surveys. Q will then develop and test a framework based on the findings to help NPA improve how community prescribing works in the future.

Q is delighted to be partnering on this project to explore the role independent prescribing will play in the future of community pharmacy. Progress and implementation to date have been inconsistent so we are very keen to draw on the expertise and views of Q members from across the UK to shape this important work.
