AI, quality and safety: implications for QI methods

Artificial intelligence (AI) could revolutionise health care, helping to secure the sustainability of the NHS by improving patient care and freeing up staff time. But how can we harness that transformative potential?

Emerging AI technologies are already changing the ways that practitioners approach quality improvement (QI) and safety work. This session will explore use cases, risks, mitigation strategies, and general implications for the daily work of quality and safety managers and leaders. 

The workshop will be led by Jeff Rakover and Marina Renton who will discuss their recent research on the implications of AI for Quality Management Systems. This includes the significant opportunities in leveraging AI for both quality planning and quality improvement:

Quality Planning: Analytical tools can analyse large datasets to identify special cause variations, enabling organisations to better prioritise problems and allocate resources effectively.

Quality Improvement: Traditional machine learning tools enhance the reliability of data interpretation and forecasting, supporting more informed decision-making processes.

During this workshop, the findings will be discussed, along with related examples, providing valuable insights into how AI can transform quality management practices.

Jeff Rakover 

As a Director of Innovation at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), Jeff’s research focuses on defining and improving value delivered by healthcare systems through a focus on measurement, management, and innovation. He also has worked in areas including improvement for obstetrical care and ambulatory safety. Jeff holds a Master’s in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (2012) and graduated from Harvard College in 2006.

Marina Renton

Marina Renton earned her M.Phil. in Public Policy from the University of Cambridge in Summer 2020 and is a 2017 graduate of Brown University, where she majored in English literature and public health and graduated Magna Cum Laude with honors in English. Marina is passionate about health communication and policy and seeks out opportunities to combine her interests in writing, healthcare, health policy, and public service.
