Starting an online group

Try to keep the name short and catchy rather than precise.

Describe your group’s purpose, the benefits of joining, and how new members can engage. Highlight what makes your group valuable, whether it’s discussions, resources, networking, or events. This description will appear on your group page and can be updated at any time.

A learning question is a question that points at what the group is trying to explore. It’s a way to invite new members to a shared knowledge journey.

This doesn’t need to be too specific – try to provide key phrases to describe your ideas.

Providing an image is optional, but recommended. This image will be used on your group page.

Group’s Convenors and first members

Tip: All groups start off quietly. It’s only natural as you invite your first few members. Begin with small conversations and actions that interest you and your new members. And remember to tag your co-convenors and group members when posting in your group space.

Will you be the sole Convenor or, if not, who are the others?

Have they told you how they’d like to support the group? If so, in what way(s)?

Commitment and Expectations

We’re here to help you balance the time and attention you invest in your group so it grows at a sustainable pace. Convening offers many benefits: access to knowledge, professional recognition, new connections, funding opportunities, and more, but these take time. Start small. Gather your first members and let your group grow step by step before taking on too much. Avoid overcommitting early on: keep things simple and manageable. Growth happens gradually, and time is a crucial ingredient.

Choose three topics you and your fellow Convenors are excited to host and experience, rather than something you would be doing for a hypothetical audience. For now, the main audience is the Convenors and the first few group members.

Do you think those three experiments or conversations are achievable within the first five months of your group?

Examples: setting up events, promoting events, sourcing a speaker, strategising your group’s next steps etc. This isn’t an exhaustive list: feel free to ask for new kinds of support.

The Q team is here to help you. We want to empower you and give you all the tools you’ll need to be a leader in the field of your choice. You can always talk to us if you have any questions.
