Joy in Work Curiosity Collective: speaking up in the real world
Dr David Naylor joins the Joy in Work Curiosity Collective for a third and final session on what silences us in teams and organisations and what can help us find and keep our voice.

About this session
In this session Dr David Naylor will guide an exploration into how we have learnt – and can learn – to use our voice, using four lines of inquiry:
- How someone like me should talk to whom and about what. (A way to notice how work and the wider culture shapes our voice and words).
- How evolution has made us prone to seek agreement and avoid questioning authority – to such an extent that we self-silence to ‘fit in’.
- What we can try when no one wants to listen.
- What we can try to retain our voice.
About our speaker
Dr David Naylor is a director of a consultancy practice researching and developing practical interventions to help people resist being silenced at work and find a way of speaking to what they see and know. This builds on his work at The King’s Fund, projects in the NHS and wider public sector to understand and mitigate the effects of bullying and incivility, and his doctoral research into being ‘constructively awkward’ in organisations. He is the author of the book Speaking Up in a Culture of Silence.
You can see more of his work by connecting with him on LinkedIn, or visiting his website.
